War of Independance and Treaty

IRA volonteers

After the Rising people thought a Republic was worth fighting for. The War of Independence began in 1919.

The IRA (Irish Republican Army) was founded in 1919 as a successor to the Irish Citizen Army. It had thousands of members across the country.

The IRA used guerilla warfare such as ambush and ‘hit and run’ tactics.

British soldiers from WWI called ‘Black and Tans’ were sent to fight the IRA.

Michael Collins is seen here signing the Treaty in 1922 which led to Ireland becoming a Free State of 26 counties. Ireland became a Republic in 1948.
