Irish and Ulster Volunteers



John Redmond was leader of the Irish Parlimentary Party from 1900 to 1918. The Party sought independence for Ireland by peaceful means. They wanted ‘Home Rule’.


Edward Carson, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party opposed Home Rule.


The Ulster Volunteers was a militia founded in 1912 to block Home Rule for Ireland.


The Irish Volunteers was set up in 1913 by Irish nationalists in response to the Ulster Volunteers.
