Home Rule For Ireland


Charles Stewart Parnell formed the Irish Parliamentary Party in 1882.It was also called the Home Rule Party and wanted land reform and more power for Ireland to make its own laws.


Isaac Butt was a Protestant lawyer who came up with “Home Rule” as the movement’s slogan.

Prime Minister of Great Britain, William Gladstone, put forward a Home Rule bill for Ireland in 1886 but it was defeated.

uk-sheet0The Government of Ireland (Home Rule) Act of 1914 was the first time the British government proposed giving powers to a member of its empire.It wasn’t implemented because of the start of World War 1. Some Irish nationalists believed it would never be implemented.
